Background of the Study
Archaeological discoveries in Onitsha South have emerged as key drivers for cultural tourism, offering a tangible connection to the region’s rich historical past. These discoveries, ranging from ancient artifacts to relics of historical settlements, provide unique attractions that can stimulate local tourism economies (Okoro, 2023). The interplay between heritage conservation and tourism development is critical in preserving cultural identity while promoting economic growth. Recent studies highlight that well-managed archaeological sites not only enhance visitors’ experiences but also foster community engagement and pride (Eze, 2024). Moreover, innovative interpretations of archaeological narratives have spurred interest among both domestic and international tourists, leading to increased visitation and revenue generation (Uche, 2025). The incorporation of digital technologies and interpretive centers further enriches the storytelling of these sites, ensuring that the region’s cultural legacy is accessible and engaging for diverse audiences. This study critically examines the impact of archaeological discoveries on tourism in Onitsha South and explores strategies for sustainable tourism development that honor historical authenticity.
Statement of the Problem
Despite the potential benefits, the tourism impact of archaeological discoveries in Onitsha South is undermined by inadequate infrastructure, limited interpretive resources, and sporadic conservation efforts. These challenges impede the effective transformation of heritage sites into sustainable tourism attractions. The disconnect between archaeological research and tourism planning has resulted in missed opportunities for economic development and cultural preservation. This study aims to address these gaps by evaluating current practices and proposing integrated strategies that enhance the tourism potential of archaeological discoveries (Chukwu, 2023).
